Polestar's course is clearly geared towards growth. New models are in the starting blocks, and sales of vehicles worldwide are expected to increase tenfold. According to the wishes of the Volvo subsidiary, this will also include the electric performance SUV Polestar 3 contribute. The third model after the Polestar 1, which is limited to 1,500 units, and the current Polestar 2 sedan is packed with the latest technology that will enable autonomous driving and a… Range of up to 610 kilometers (manufacturer's information).
Polestar 3: huge battery, good aerodynamics
This range makes possible a battery capacity of 111 kWh, so the Polestar 3 built in China would even outperform the battery of Mercedes' electric flagship EQS (108 kWh). From 2024, the Swedes want to also produce their electric SUV in a factory in South Carolina in order to be able to serve the US market more efficiently.
The Polestar 3 is already in showrooms in Germany, but the electric SUV will probably not be delivered before then second quarter of 2024. According to the manufacturer, the reason for this is software adjustments and the updating of individual apps to a new operating system, which the Polestar 3 shares with the electric Volvo EX90.
In addition to the liquid-cooled one Lithium-ion battery Sophisticated aerodynamics ensure range. An aero wing was therefore integrated into the bonnet and the rear spoiler. The rear is decorated with additional aero blades.
Long range dual motor variant at launch
At market launch, the 4.90 meter long Polestar 3 will be offered in the long-range dual-motor version with 360 kW (490 hp) and 840 Nm. The manufacturer gives the base price for this engine 88,600 euros at. With an optionally orderable Performance package the total output increases to 380 kW (517 hp) and 910 Nm. The rear axle of the Polestar 3 was given an electric torque vectoring dual clutch function. Clever detail: To protect the battery, the rear electric motor of the Polestar 3 can be decoupled, so the SUV is then only powered by the front electric motor.
Air suspension for more comfort or dynamics
The Polestar 3 comes with two-chamber air suspension as standard. This means that the SUV should be able to switch electronically between comfortable and dynamic chassis settings at lightning speed. In addition to the air suspension, all versions of the Polestar 3 have a panoramic glass roof, full-LED headlights and taillights, retractable door handles with proximity sensors and 21-inch alloy wheels.
In the first model year, a Plus package and a Pilot package are also standard equipment. They include details such as a Bowers & Wilkins audio system with 25 speakers, 3D surround sound with Dolby Atmos function, soft close doors, a head-up display and Pilot Assist.
Electric SUV with 5 radar sensors and 5 cameras
For the design of the passenger cell, Polestar is committed to sustainability and chose materials such as “bio-attributed” MicroTech, animal welfare-certified leather and fully traceable wool covers. In addition to the luxury feel, the Polestar 3 also offers high-tech interiors.
According to the manufacturer, the electric SUV is Polestar's first vehicle with the Drive Core computer from Nvidia. The computing system with software from Volvo Cars processes the data from the numerous sensors and cameras in the Polestar 3. The Polestar 3 has five radar modules, five external cameras and twelve external ultrasonic sensors as standard. They control the driver assistance systems and simultaneously monitor the interior and driver.
More safety in the interior with Smart Eye
Two cameras with Smart Eye technology ensure that a Warning tone or even emergency braking can be triggered if the driver is about to fall asleep. The passengers are also monitored by radar sensors that can detect movements in the sub-millimeter range. This is to prevent children or pets from being unintentionally left in the vehicle. At the same time, the system is connected to the air conditioning to prevent heat strokes or hypothermia among the vehicle occupants.
About the central one 14.5 inch display This will be in the center console Android Automotive OS controlled. The vehicle's operating system was created in collaboration with Google and is an evolution of the technology introduced in the Polestar 2. The system can be updated and added new functions using over-the-air updates (OTA) without having to visit a Polestar service point.
To ensure that neither the battery nor the passengers freeze in winter, the Polestar 3 has one as standard Heat pump, which uses the ambient heat for climate and battery conditioning. In addition, the new Polestar SUV should be capable of bi-directional charging and thus offer the possibility of using vehicle-to-grid and plug-and-charge in the future.
Another optional Pilot package offers lidar from Luminar, an additional control unit from Nvidia, three cameras, four ultrasonic sensors and a cleaning function for the front and rear cameras. According to the manufacturer, the Polestar 3 is ideally equipped for the future of autonomous driving.
