New Peugeot 5008 (2024): Electric van with mega range

After the 3008, Peugeot will bring the 5008 as its long version in autumn 2024. The technology is identical; in the electric version, the E-5008 can travel up to 660 kilometers. The seven-seater will also be available as a hybrid petrol engine.

  • Peugeot 5008 comes electric and as a hybrid

  • Seven seats in a length of 4.79 meters

  • Elegant cockpit with “floating” screen

Family vans or SUVs with electric drive, long-distance range and seven seats? At the moment there is little choice here apart from the monstrous Kia EV9 and the BYD Tang.

With the new Peugeot 5008, a model will be added from autumn 2024 that will… more affordable price regions should be located, with a variable and elegantly furnished interior and – at least according to the initial information – with a range suitable for everyday use.

Actually the Peugeot 5008 is the one again Long version of the 3008, which has just been launched on the market. Visually, however, it appears a bit more conservative and boxy, which is due to the higher utility value. After all, seven seats have to fit into its 4.79 meter long, 1.89 meter wide and 1.69 meter high body. The 3008, as a visibly sportier and 25 centimeter shorter version with a sloping rear, can only transport five people. The 5008 can be ordered as a five- or seven-seater.

Good comfort even at the back

The manufacturer promises one for the second row good legroom, but in the third row this might be a little more modest. An upcoming test will have to show whether tall people can sit there. At least access to the very back shouldn’t require too much flexibility thanks to an “easy access system”: Row two can be folded down completely and pushed forward.

Peugeot also promises that passengers six and seven do not have to remain on thin folding seats, but rather, according to the press release, “thick and soft cushions” guarantee good comfort even in the last row.

Peugeot 5008: Trunk suitable for vacation

The Trunk volume The manufacturer states an acceptable 259 liters with all seating, a good 748 liters with five seats and 1815 liters suitable for moving with the rear seats completely folded down. The backrests in row two can be folded down in a 40:20:40 ratio, those in the third row in a 50:50 ratio. Maximum variability should therefore be given. There should be space for 80 liters of cargo in a drawer at the very back under the trunk floor.

The dashboard is identical to that of the 3008 and has an attractive and modern look. The Peugeot-typical “i-Cockpit” The basic version “Allure” consists of two 10-inch screens that are integrated into a single, elegant panel. The second available version, “GT”, is equipped with a single, 21-inch screen, which looks even more valuable.

The technology is up to date

What both variants have in common is that the panel appears to float on the dashboard, which is partly covered in fabric, thereby bringing a certain lightness and elegance to the car. On the right side of the panel, the usual functions such as navigation, entertainment and heating can be controlled via touchscreen. There are ten of them so-called “i-Toggles”Depending on the driver’s taste, they can be assigned functions that are often used and can be activated at the touch of a button.

That Smartphones Being connected wirelessly via Apple Carplay or Android Auto and being able to be charged inductively is also a given in this new car. Software updates are carried out over the air, and voice control, which can be activated via the command “OK Peugeot”, should not only understand standard commands, rather also natural language can recognize. It can also distinguish whether the driver or the passenger is speaking.

Engines: Hybrid petrol and electric

Not only the cockpit, but also the drives are identical to the engines of the 3008. For those who don’t want to decide on an electric car yet, there is a mild hybrid variant with a 136 hp petrol engine in combination with a six-speed dual clutch transmission.

A small electric motor contributes some power at low speeds and relieves the load on the gasoline engine so that it can run on “up to 15 percent” less gasoline. The WLTP standard consumption is 5.7 liters per 100 kilometers. As is usual with mild hybrids, the 5008 with this system can only drive electrically in certain driving situations (starting off, maintaining speeds in 30 speed zones, sailing).

Very good: range of up to 660 kilometers

However, the focus is on the drives the pure electric variants. And they make you sit up and take notice: Even the basic version with its 73 kWh battery should be able to travel 500 kilometers in the WLTP cycle. And with the top version, the issue of range anxiety should no longer be an issue: Peugeot has installed an alternative battery with one in the belly of the 5008 remarkable capacity of 98 kWh – this is so far unique in this vehicle class.

The result is a range of 660 kilometers according to the prescribed WLTP cycle. An upcoming test will have to prove how high the range actually is in practice. The key data are at least very promising.

Fast reloading is possible

Also something the reloading concerns. Peugeot also offers a 22 kW variant as an alternative to the standard 11 kW charger for AC charging. And the 5008 can draw up to 160 kW at fast charging stations – that should be suitable for everyday use for quick interim charging on long journeys. Peugeot speaks of 30 minutes of charging time for the hub from 20 to 80 percent.

Three electric motor variants are provided. The entry-level version is with 157 kW/213 hp, above is the Long Range with 170 kW/231 hp (both with an electric motor and front-wheel drive), and the most powerful E-5008 comes with all-wheel drive, two electric motors and 237 kW/320 hp power. Peugeot has not yet announced prices.

The E-5008 could actually be an interesting and so far unrivaled option for families who need space. purely electric without restrictions to drive. In any case, the Renault Scenic, VW ID.4 and Škoda Enyaq can neither boast seven seats nor the range of the Peugeot. At least in terms of range, the upcoming Opel Grandland should be able to compete with the French one – it has the same drive technology as the Peugeot 3008 and 5008. But it doesn’t offer seven seats either.
