Best electric cars 2024: test winners by vehicle class
More and more Chinese car manufacturers want to sell their electric cars in Germany. But are they good enough to beat the established manufacturers? Partly yes, as the tests show. Winners and losers at a glance – sorted by vehicle class.

For the time being, it remains the same: the frontrunners for electric cars in the 2023 registration statistics are Tesla Model Y, VW ID.4/ID.5 and VW ID.3. Škoda Enyaq, Fiat 500e, Audi Q4 e-tron, Tesla Model 3, Cupra Born and Mercedes EQA also feature well in the top 10. In the future, however, the current balance of power could begin to shake. For two reasons: Firstly, because government sales promotion has ceased and more or less all brands are competing with individual price discounts. Secondly, because Chinese car manufacturers are entering the market in large numbers and with ever better electric cars.
The winners of the vehicle classes
The trend is unmistakable: Chinese-made electric vehicles are now achieving more than respectable ratings in the test. Nio For example, the technically high-quality models ET5, ET7 and EL7 achieved very good marks in the test. It is currently proven to deliver good value for money MGbut also BYD and Smart are to be included sooner or later. The fight for top positions and market shares will continue to intensify, that is certain.
There is a current surprise in the Compact class: There the Volvo One more reason to follow the editorial team’s experiences with the Volvo XC40 in long-term testing.
Both Microcar The Fiat 500e is still unbeaten. Best Small car is the new Hyundai Kona Electric. In the Middle class The facelifted Škoda Enyaq managed to take the current top position with the outstanding technology grade of 1.6. The Hyundai Ioniq 6 and the BMW iX3 remain close behind with a grade of 1.7. With a 1.6, only the BMW iX and the Mercedes EQS scored in the technology rating – both very expensive vehicles Upper class. The exorbitantly expensive Lucid Air GT (test car: 175,000 euros) is also largely convincing and gets a grade of 1.8.
